2019, just before the world felt like it would collapse amidst a sweeping global pandemic. Ananda Karabo is an artist living in Los Angeles, California who was just in a car accident. She bumped her head pretty good, enough so that she was admitted to the hospital where they ran a few scans. During the necessary brain scans, a doctor noticed something that shouldn’t be there. Ananda was then diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Upon receiving this news her world pretty much did collapse.
She had already begun seeing symptoms of MS creep into her daily life before the accident. Meetings and the typical day to day would easily wear on her more than usual. A life of bohemian style travels now required strict planning and space to deal with symptoms. Even an easy day seemed reluctant to end or give way to any needed resting moments.
In order to process what was happening to her, Ananda dove into art. Painting using oils and acrylics allowed her to express her feelings on canvas. Each brush stroke and color choice became a release of emotion. Beginning this art practice brought a focus back to her life that almost seemed like it was slipping away previously. Not only did it help her in coping with her situation, it also began to give back.
Ananda relies heavily on meditation, manifestation, and now her art to navigate life’s chaotic moments. She focuses on the positives and moves those dark feelings out typically through painting. She has taken this new life in stride more than most, by turning her newfound passion into her work. She has been featured in more than several exhibitions across the United States with a current piece on exhibition in Tucson, Arizona. The piece “Fractures” was also featured on a billboard in Times Square in New York City.
Her message is a clear one. Don’t listen to negative critics like a high school art teacher. Focus on the positive and the things that bring you joy. If you put out love and put forth the effort, your work will speak to others and find its audience.
